12 Pro Max Plus a Cheap Macro
Recently I graduated from the iPhone XR to the 12 Pro Max. This upgrade was significant in reference to video shooting – the XR was constantly overheating and crashing while using Filmic Pro for longer recordings (my bad). Overall the 12 Pro Max is an amazing stills camera for a phone camera.
I wanted to invest in one of Moment’s macro lenses but didn’t want to shell out the cash. ( I already have 4 Moment lenses and the kit to go along with them.) The macro Moment lens would run me about $130 Canadian, and I wasn’t positive it would be put to good use; more of just a novelty. So I started scouring the internet (primarily Amazon) for a cheap alternative and I managed to pick up a clip-on set that included a 25x macro along with a bunch of other novelty lenses for under $30 bucks. Here are some of the preliminary results.
These are just a few examples as i haven’t really seriously dedicated the right amount of time to set up a tripod and plan out some more controlled shots. Overall I would say the cheap clip-on solution can do what you need if you know what you are doing and work within the limits of the lens and camera you have.
You need to make sure it will fit your phone and be prepared to “fiddle around” with it. Remember that the focal length will be very short and it will be hard to keep things focussed without locking off your phone or steadying your hand on something. You may need to take a few random shots to get the focus range you want.
I love the results and it will even work with video. I was able to fit the clip over a thick case as well and the kit itself includes 7 lenses but some of them are redundant depending on the phone you have. But if you want a cheap macro to play around with this one worked for me.
